Grocery Store Senior Discounts & Senior Days
Last updated 2026-07-15 · Offers change — when in doubt, call your local store and ask.
Plenty of grocery chains still knock 5-10% off your bill on a set day of the week for shoppers who qualify - though the list keeps shrinking, and a store having a Senior Day in one town doesn't guarantee it in another. Always bring an ID and ask the cashier before you pay, and call your specific store first if you're planning a trip around it.

| Weis Markets (Mid-Atlantic/Northeast) | 10% off Weis-brand products (~6,000 items) | 60 | Every Tuesday. | Hy-Vee (Midwest) | 5% discount | 55 | Senior Citizen Discount Day, historically Thursdays, though the exact day can vary by individual store - check your local Hy-Vee. Excludes pharmacy, lottery, tobacco, postal supplies, gift cards, and wine/spirits. Hy-Vee (official store news) |
| DeCicco Family Markets (Westchester/Rockland, NY) | 5% off | 62 | Every Wednesday. Requires activating a free DeCicco Preferred Shopper Card at the customer service desk with proof of birth date. | United Markets (Marin County, CA) | 10% off total grocery bill | 60 | First Thursday of every month. Cannot be combined with school Scrip discounts; alcohol excluded. Free CarePool rides available for seniors to get to the store that day (415-454-0927). United Markets (official) |
| Piggly Wiggly (varies - independently owned/franchised) | Typically 5% off | 60 | Because most Piggly Wiggly stores are independently owned, the day and terms vary a lot by location: many report every Wednesday, some report Thursday or Tuesday, and minimum age can be 60 or 62. There is no single corporate policy - call your local store to confirm before you go, and ask the cashier for the discount at checkout. Regional Piggly Wiggly franchise posts (2024-2025) / roundups |
| Gristedes (New York City) | 10% off | 65 | Reported on Tuesdays at participating locations; not all Gristedes stores take part, so check with your specific store and bring ID. SeniorCitizenDiscountList.org roundup |
| Albertsons | Around 10% off, where offered | 55 | Not a corporate-wide program - participation and the exact day (commonly reported as the first Wednesday of the month) vary a lot by division and individual store, and some regions (including parts of California) don't offer it at all. Call ahead to confirm before making a special trip. AARP / The Senior List (2025-2026) roundups |
| Safeway | Around 10% off, where offered | 62 | Like Albertsons (same parent company), Safeway has no single corporate senior-discount policy - some individual stores extend a discount, often reported as the first Wednesday of the month, but many do not. Confirm with your local store first. AARP / The Senior List (2025-2026) roundups |
Most senior discounts are not automatic — you have to ask. A polite
"Do you offer a senior discount?" at checkout is the highest-paying sentence in retail.
Chains with no senior discount (so you don't waste the ask)
- Walmart — No senior discount, in-store or online. Also discontinued its COVID-era dedicated senior shopping hour back in 2020. Walmart's separate $4 generic-prescription program is not age-restricted.
- Kroger (core banner) — The old standing senior discount was phased out between 2017 and 2024. Kroger now only runs occasional, non-recurring 'senior discount days' at select stores a few times a year - it's not a weekly or monthly benefit you can plan around.
- Publix — No company-wide senior discount. A minority of Publix locations in the Carolinas/Southeast have been reported to informally offer around 5% off on Wednesdays, but this is not an official chain-wide program - call your local store to check.
- Ingles Markets — No senior discount. Ingles offered a dedicated early senior/vulnerable-shopper hour (7-8am Tue/Wed) during the pandemic, but that was a shopping-hours accommodation, not a price discount, and is not confirmed as still running.
- Food Lion — No senior discount day - viral social posts claiming 6-60% off are false. Food Lion does offer Monday/Wednesday early shopping hours (7-8am) for immunocompromised seniors, but no price reduction.
- Winn-Dixie — Reports conflict and skew old (2018-era Wednesday 5% off for 60+ in some Florida stores); more recent sources say the discount has been discontinued. Assume it's not available and confirm with your local store.
- Big Y (New England) — Discontinued its former Tuesday 10% senior discount. Only prescription-related senior savings remain through its pharmacy Rx plan.
- Schnucks (Midwest) — No senior discount confirmed since at least 2018. Schnucks did add a senior-only early shopping hour (6-7am) starting in 2020, but that's about crowd avoidance, not savings.
- Stater Bros. (Southern California) — No senior discount. Offers a dedicated early shopping hour (7-8am) for shoppers 65+, but no price reduction.
- Market Basket (New England) — No senior discount confirmed. Offers early senior shopping hours (Tue/Wed/Thu, 5:30-7am for 60+) but not a price discount.
Tips
- Call the specific store location before you go - senior discount programs are often set locally, not by the whole chain, and can change or end without much notice.
- Bring a government-issued ID showing your birth date; some stores do a one-time age check to link the discount to your loyalty account, others check every visit.
- Ask the cashier for the discount before you pay - it's rarely applied automatically, and many stores require you to say something at checkout.
- Common exclusions across almost every chain: alcohol, tobacco, lottery tickets, gift cards, postage stamps, prescriptions, and sale-priced items. Don't expect the discount to stack on top of an already-discounted item.
- If a chain isn't listed here with a discount, that's a deliberate choice, not an oversight - several big names (Walmart, core Kroger, Publix corporate-wide) simply don't have one right now, no matter what a viral post claims.
- When in doubt, a quick phone call or a look at the store's own website (search '[store name] senior discount official') beats trusting a random social media post.
