"Do you offer a senior discount?" at checkout is the highest-paying sentence in retail.
Tips
- Call the specific store location before you go - senior discount days, ages, and percentages often differ store-to-store, even within the same chain (this is especially true for Goodwill, Bealls, and TJX stores).
- Bring a photo ID with your birth date. Many stores require it to verify age, especially the first time.
- Ask if the discount stacks with clearance pricing or store coupons - some do, some don't, and cashiers usually know the local rule.
- If a store's policy has changed or ended (senior discounts come and go), ask a manager - loyalty/rewards programs are increasingly used instead of a fixed discount day.
- Sign up for the store's free rewards program if one is required (Michaels, Walgreens) - it's free and often the only way to unlock the discount.
